Greed and ambition looked like identical twins from afar; but they are distinctively different when we look closer. Greed is wanting more than everything; Ambition is wanting what one wants and it's only a matter of how much... With everything as the highest limit. It's funny how people mistake greed for ambition as it is common to see rich people only wanting to be richer and you wonder what they can do with so much money.
I know how to hurt
I know how to kill
I know what to show
And what to conceal
I know when to talk
And I know when to touch
No one ever die from wanting too much
The world is not enough
But it is such a perfect place to start, my love
And if you're strong enough
Together we can take the world apart, my love
People like us
Know how to survive
There's no point in living
If you can't feel the life
We know when to kiss
And we know when to kill
If we can't have it all
Then nobody will
I feel sick
I feel scared
I feel ready
And yet unprepared
Nevertheless, can we blame our natural human greed? We all started off as creatures striving hard to survive. We started with almost literally nothing: Our body defense is lame compared to many animals, we can only have one child at a time, we don't have nice claws to help us in hunting, we are messed up animals (No, don't tell me we are not animals) to start with. The one thing that allows us to continue having generation after generation is our ability to make and use things. We learn to use fire to our benefit, we use sharp objects to pierce through the thick skins of our prey, we make amours to protect ourselves. Back then, it was perhaps ambition, that is to help us to survive longer, that achieve these.
However, we never expected it to shape shift into greed. We eventually harvest and rape everything around us: We cut down the trees to build houses bigger than needed, we mine to get the minerals to make weapons, we kill and kill anything that is not human to our benefit, we brainwashed animals to be our eternal slaves for generations. As if it's still not enough, we wage wars against one another to claim other people's land and take away everything for ourselves. Of course, everything is not enough so we take more than everything.
Kill. Pillage. Plunder. Rape. Slaughter. To satisfy our greed.
Then again, we don't just act in groups. Women seduce to get the money they want. Men sweet talk to score in becoming Casanovas. We try to find ways to climb up the ladder by using other people, regardless on whether they are corpse or breathing, to climb above. We abuse trust to our own advantage.
Before we knew it, we eyed on Mars as a place we might go next if Earth should die. We may know that it has been our fault that things turn out so badly on earth due to our selfishness, greed and ignorant. We probably start making promises that we won't do the same if we should migrate there. Of course, promises are made to be broken.
"We did it out of survival instincts", we justified by saying this. However, can you tell me on how much of our sins committed in the past and at present is survival instincts? How much more do we intend to deny that ugly depths of the human nature? How much longer are we going to mask greed with ambition?
To greed, after all, the world is just simply not enough.
